Meta’nın Yapay Zeka Baş Bilimcisi, 12 Yıl Sonunda Şirketteki Görevine Veda Ediyor

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has experienced the loss of a significant AI expert. Yann LeCun has decided to part ways with the company.

Joining Meta in 2013, Yann LeCun, a professor at New York University, initially led the Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) department, later advancing to the position of “Chief AI Scientist.” After completing 12 years at the company, he has chosen to leave Meta to establish his own AI venture. In a statement, LeCun expressed his ambition to develop systems capable of understanding the physical world, possessing long-term memory, reasoning, and creating complex action plans. While Meta has recently implemented an aggressive hiring strategy to remain competitive in AI, it has previously made headlines for substantial layoffs rather than new hires. As part of a restructuring effort, it was announced that 600 employees from the AI department would be let go. The company realized its expansive growth in this area and stated, “By downsizing our team, we will need less discussion to make decisions. This will empower each individual to take on more responsibility and enhance the impact of their work.” Meta appointed Alexandr Wang, CEO of Scale AI, to lead their AI-focused Superintelligence Labs, having recently built a significantly large team.

For example, Meta has hired Lucas Beyer, Alexander Kolesnikov, and Xiaohua Zhai from OpenAI’s Zurich office, which developed ChatGPT. Following this, Meta also brought on OpenAI employee Trapit Bansal and transferred researchers Shengjia Zhao, Jiahui Yu, Shuchao Bi, and Hongyu Ren from OpenAI. Additionally, Meta has acquired Ruoming Pang, who leads Apple’s internal AI models, and Daniel Gross from Apple. Recently, OpenAI researchers Jason Wei and Hyung Won Chung also joined Meta. It has been announced that senior Apple employees Mark Lee and Tom Gunter, who worked on AI projects, have moved to Meta, along with Bowen Zhang, who was involved with Apple’s AI models. According to reports, approximately 50% of the Superintelligence team at Meta is composed of Chinese AI experts, with 40% from OpenAI, 20% from Google DeepMind, and 15% from Scale AI. Sources indicate that these employees’ annual contracts range between $10 million and $100 million, depending on their positions.
