Mitsubishi has launched an innovative battery swap network pilot program for electric vehicles in Tokyo, Japan. This technology isn’t limited to passenger vehicles; Mitsubishi Fuso’s commercial electric trucks are also part of this initiative. The program, executed in collaboration with Ample and Yamato Transport, aims to electrify regional and last-mile commercial delivery fleets.

Battery swapping is expanding in Tokyo

Battery swapping technology drastically reduces charging times, one of the main challenges faced by electric vehicle owners. This multi-year pilot program will kick off with over 150 commercial electric vehicles equipped with swappable batteries, establishing 14 modular battery exchange stations in the city’s most densely populated urban areas. Each station will accommodate over 100 vehicles. The Tokyo consortium aims for battery replacement times of just five minutes, with the entire process being fully automated, unlike traditional charging or refueling.

Mitsubishi Fuso eCanter trucks typically require an entire night for full charging through traditional AC methods or at least 1-2 hours with DC fast charging in Japan. This pilot program, jointly executed by Mitsubishi, Ample, and Mitsubishi Fuso, aims to eliminate long charging times and minimize downtime for vehicles through its battery swapping system, thereby accelerating the shift to electric vehicles in the commercial transport sector.

Mitsubishi also emphasizes that these battery depots can serve as energy storage systems to help support the electric grid during natural disasters. This capability is critically important in countries like Japan, which frequently experience natural disasters. The first stations are planned to be established by September 2025.
